It changes yearly, but given my recent move to Kamloops, mule deer currently hold my focus.
Favourite terrain
Mountain rainforest timber, sparse interior timber, grassland open country — in no particular order.

Coastal blacktail — my first successful boat-in hunt. Can't beat filling a boat with deer and crabs.

Behind the Bow
How did you get into archery?
It seemed like a natural progression when I began hunting a few years back. As an adolescent I used to make bows from sticks, and archery has always held a romantic appeal for me.
Interestingly, ancient Sumerian cuneiform was the first fully developed written language in human history, emerging over 5,000 years ago. It began with pictures drawn to represent tangible items, like animals or sacks of grain. Eventually these pictograms expanded to represent phonetically similar sounds — a linguistic breakthrough that allowed for the communication of complex grammar and abstract thoughts. For example, the Sumerian word for “life” shared the exact same sound as their word for “arrow” (both pronounced ti). While it began as a sheer phonetic coincidence, it serves as a beautiful metaphor: for the Sumerians, and many cultures around the world, archery truly was life.
This is my long-winded way of saying that for 99% of human history, activities like hunting, fishing and foraging were the entirety of human existence. These behaviours are deeply ingrained within our nature, and the long, winding path of fate has simply brought me back to them.

What do you hunt?
MooseGrouseDeerHare
Favourite species — and why
Moose are a lot of fun because they are so big and angry. I think they are easier to find than elk and can be just as interactive in the rut. They're the biggest species of deer in the world and probably the most unique in terms of antlers and biology. What's more Canadian than moose!? Sitting in a tree stand or putting a stalk on a deer are both good fun too.
Favourite terrain
Hiking in the mountains or floating down the river. A good float is a nice way to do a bit of fishing too!
Most memorable hunt
I had a fly-in float hunt with my best friend (and pilot) out in Manitoba. We boated around lake and river systems for 10 days without turning up a lick of moose. Then, with hours of daylight left on our last day, a rut hellstorm broke loose — cows running around kicking each other and the herd bull running in with a temper. It was a true buzzer beater that demonstrated the lowest lows and ultimate highs of hunting.
“With practice you can see a very steady progression.”

Favourite species — and why
Elk. It's an obsession, due to social media — and the meat is delicious.
Favourite terrain
Thick to open timber, complex terrain. I look for the spots I feel most people overlook.
Most memorable hunt
When I was 15 I went on a hunt with a friend a few years older who had just got his hunting licence. We went into this field way before light and fell asleep in the truck. When we woke there was a herd of deer around us. They moved on, and my friend went into the fog.
Minutes go by, and there's a gunshot echoing through the fog. He had dropped his first buck, a 2-point. We get down to it and neither of us had a clue what to do next — just that we needed to get the guts out. So we figured it out.
